What is The Battery?

The Battery is the historic 25-acre park at the southern tip of Manhattan, home to SeaGlass Carousel, The Battery Oval lawn, 135,000 square feet of perennial gardens, Castle Clinton National Monument, and so much more.

Where is the park?

The park is located at the southern tip of Manhattan, across from Bowling Green and adjacent to Whitehall Ferry Terminal, serving the Staten Island Ferry.

What is SeaGlass Carousel?

SeaGlass Carousel is a carousel like no other. Inspired by the original New York Aquarium once located in the park, visitors ride within huge fish figures that circle, oscillate, and move up and down, giving the illusion of swimming in the ocean.

What are the hours?

Castle Garden

What is Castle Garden?

腾讯体育APPDating back to the turn of the 19th century, the building once known as Castle Garden, and now known as Castle Clinton National Monument, lived many lives as a military fort, opera house, aquarium, and Immigration depot operated by New York State. From 1855 to 1890, Castle Garden welcomed waves of immigrants including Nikola Tesla, Harry Houdini, Emma Goldman, Joseph Pulitzer, and Mary Mallon (later known as “Typhoid Mary”).

What is castlegarden.org?

CastleGarden.org is an educational project of The Battery Conservancy. This free website offers access to an extraordinary database of information on 11 million immigrants who arrived from 1820 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. More than 100 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period. CastleGarden.org is an invaluable resource for educators, scholars, students, family historians, and the interested public.

Do you have physical archives that I can visit?

We donated all of our physical archives to the National Archives in Washington, DC. You can visit Castle Clinton National Monument to retrace the steps of your ancestors.

My relative isn’t coming up in the search, help!

It is possible your relative’s name was spelled differently in the records. Try using a wildcard * for part of the name. For example, Browne could have been spelled Brown, so try searching “Brown*.”

How do I get to the farm?
Where should our school bus drop us off and pick us up?
School buses can reach the park on Battery Place or State Street.  If your driver needs an address, they can use 5 Battery Place or the corner of State St and Bridge St.  These spots are marked on the map below in relation to the Battery Urban Farm entrance.
How many people are allowed on one field trip?

32 students per trip.

To hold an event at The Battery, you need to .

If your event is a gathering of fewer than 20 people (a birthday, a family picnic), you do not need to fill out a permit request.

Statue of Liberty

When do ferries leave for the Statue of Liberty?

Statue Cruises offers ferry service  every day of the year, except December 25th. Hours vary with the seasons.

 

Where do I purchase tickets to the Statue of Liberty?
